We've just come back from a lightning fast trip to Sydney. We stayed for one night and managed to see the Frida Kahlo exhibition, meet my friend's new baby and celebrate my cousin's 21st birthday. Here's a look at what we ate and did:
We woke up early on Saturday morning and were on the road by 8am. We listened to the new Avalanches album (it's so fun!) and stopped for coffee at this cute cafe in Collector. It was incredibly windy the whole way down - the car wobbled a bit on the road!
First stop was the Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. We booked tickets online and the show was packed. There's a good mix of paintings but also documentary style photographs that give a strong sense of how Frida lived her life. I thought it was excellent and I'm so glad we had the chance to go.
The exhibition was Tony's pick so I chose our lunch spot. The Rising Sun Workshop is back up and running in a permanent location in Newtown. We drove down the lane that it's on and found a little car park - yay! The ramen was excellent (the house made sodas are great too) and I bought a dark chocolate and ginger cookie to take home. I had one years ago, and still think about it :)
My friend Marina had a baby two weeks ago, a little girl called Chloe. I met her son Max at two weeks, so it was extra nice to hold Chloe at the same age. When the babies fell to sleep, we sat around drinking tea, catching up and eating cupcakes that Marina had bought as an early birthday treat. It was really nice.
Most of our friends and family live in Sydney, so our visits are always busy. On Saturday night we saw Tony's brother and sister-in-law who made us a yummy roast dinner. We made it to their place just in time to see our little nephew running around before bed. My cold was still lingering and so by the end of the night, I'd lost my voice. Some Gelato Messina helped my poor throat :)
We stayed in an Airbnb flat in Alexandria, which was a short walk from one of my favourite Sydney cafes - Bread & Circus. Tony tried coffee with butter in it (apparently it's good for you!) and I had a delicious lemongrass and ginger chai in an attempt to make my voice last the whole day.
Living closer to Sydney has meant that we can come back for big birthdays, like my cousin Max's 21st. We had a banquet at a Chinese restaurant that was reserved for special occasions when I was growing up. I'm so glad we were able to go - the speeches were excellent, and it was great to see my grandparents and my niece and nephew who are always growing and changing. We made it back to Canberra before dinner and will probably be eating salad for the rest of the week.
